Job Description:

Our client is looking for a highly motivated, talented and experienced individual to lead its business unit that is focused on enabling “beyond-lithium-ion” cell technologies.  This is a high profile role in the organization focused on growing this unit.   The team member in this role will be responsible for driving the company’s efforts to develop and eventually commercialize the technologies through a range of collaborations with world-class cell partners, OEMs and potentially other materials companies.  This individual will develop the company’s product and commercial strategy and lead the execution of those plans.  As a senior member of the business team, this individual will also assist the company’s lithium business unit in a similar capacity as required. 

This position reports to VP Business Development and is located in the Greater Boston area.


  • B.S. or advanced degree in Materials Science or Chemical Engineering.  MBA a plus.

  • Minimum of 10 years of industry experience in either the battery materials or cell making industry leading relevant teams in product development and product/market strategy development and execution.

  • Experience in advanced rechargeable battery technologies a must.  Experience with alkaline cell chemistries a plus.

  • Experience with advanced materials and cell manufacturing processes a plus.

  • Strong industry contacts in related cell-making and end user markets a plus.

  • Experienced in all aspects of business development from new product technology sales, to applications-based product development to commercial aspects including technical proposals, pricing and deal closing.

  • Comfortable in a leadership role with proven track record for leading and managing cross functional teams that consist of engineering, scientific, and operations personnel in support of commercialization goals.

  • Demonstrated aptitude for creative thinking, technically and commercially.

  • Ability to develop elevator pitches and make excellent oral presentations to high profile customers, board of directors and company personnel.

  • Excellent written communications skills.

  • Desire and ability to travel as needed to current and potential customers and partners.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Developing a thorough understanding of company’s technology strategy and readiness.

  • Assessing market needs, competitive landscape and key industry trends to define company’s product roadmap for success.

  • To identify best-in-class cell makers and other partners (e.g. material manufacturers, equipment vendors, etc.) that can partner with the company in joint collaboration agreements to accelerate the development of beyond-lithium cells that incorporate company’s materials to meet the needs of meaningful market segments.

  • To develop a scale-up strategy for company’s technology including what role IM should play in the supply chain, what partnerships the company should or should not establish to scale up manufacturing of their materials, how cells should be built and by whom, what capital requirements are needed to enable company’s path to commercial readiness.

  • Interface with BD, Technical and Financial teams to create a long-term business plan for company’s beyond-lithium technologies.

  • Interface with Legal and BD teams to ensure partnership agreements protect company’s intellectual property and help to ensure company’s commercial success.

  • Become the primary contact for company’s customer’s engineering and R&D teams.

  • Develop a full communications package summarizing IM’s beyond-lithium value proposition – company slide deck, data sheets, etc.

  • Assist in the management of key collaborations with cell makers, etc.

  • Drive the development of product cost models and pricing strategy.

  • Assist other members of BD team and technical staff as required in company’s lithium-based technologies with regard to customer engagement and management and product strategy and planning.

  • Work under minimal supervision with attention to detail and organization.

  • Work successfully in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial and team-oriented environment.

  • Drive supply chain.

  • Function as part of leadership team in setting company strategy, policies and enabling a culture to achieve overall company goals.
